Is Double Texting Bad? When It Helps and When It Hurts

Updated September 23, 2026

Double texting means sending another message before the other person has replied. It has a bad reputation, but in most healthy chats both people do it all the time.

When double texting is completely fine

  • You forgot to add something, or are sending a photo with context.
  • You are close and chat in bursts: lots of short messages instead of one long one.
  • It is been a day or two and you are following up on a real question.

When it signals a problem

  • One person does almost all of the double texting, month after month.
  • Follow-ups keep going unanswered.
  • You feel anxious waiting, and the extra texts are about getting a reaction.

The issue is rarely double texting itself. The issue is a one-sided pattern: one person keeps chasing and the other keeps pulling back.

Check the ratio, not the rule

If you both double text a similar amount, it is just your chat style. If the ratio is heavily lopsided, that is the more honest thing to reflect on.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I wait before double texting?

There is no fixed rule. If it is a question that needs an answer, a friendly follow-up after a day is reasonable.

Is triple texting worse?

Same answer: context and pattern matter far more than the count on any single day.
